It is considerably more complicated than that, and to dive into a roof cleaning project without knowing what you are doing might lead you to an expensive roof repair project — and a roof repair project is considerably more costly than any roof cleaning project.

1. A Power Washer Is Not Your Friend For Cleaning A Roof

The videos one can see online of people using power washers to remove dirt from just about every surface are well known, and one would think this would, therefore, be the best thing to clean one’s roof.

This is not the case, particularly if one has a roof composed of shingles as the shingles can easily become loose or entirely removed from the power of the power washer. Then instead of removing the dirt or mildew on your roof, you would remove the roof itself.

Powerful washing techniques might work for other things,  but it can cause extreme damage to your tile roof.

Water might even get in between the tiles themselves and ultimately cause your ceiling to leak water, leaving you to wonder how it is also possible as you have a solid roof over your head.

2. Regularly Inspect Your Roof

One of the best ways to make sure that your roof is as clean as can be is to inspect it regularly.

This does not mean that you necessarily will get up on the roof every week or even every other week.

Most people will tell you that as long as you give the roof a proper inspection at least two or three times a year, you should probably be okay.

By inspecting your roof two or three times a year, you will know if it is time to clean it or not.

3. Don’t Allow Your Roof To Be Entirely Overrun With Moss Before Cleaning

Moss is a hazard on your roof, but you shouldn’t allow it to overrun your roof before you first clean it off entirely.

The sooner you clean your roof, the better you are — the more moss there is to clean, the more difficult the job.

When you are doing your two to three times a year roof inspection, you can take the time to make sure you don’t have any moss on the roof that needs to be removed.

4. Make Sure You Can Safely Walk Your Roof Prior To Cleaning

Before you even consider cleaning your roof, make sure it is feasible for you to walk upon your roof safely.

This is taking into consideration that you already have some safety equipment that would prevent you from falling off of your roof.

If you find it too difficult to walk on your roof, consider hiring professionals to clean your roof instead.

5. Replace Broken Tiles

Occasionally you will find tiles on your roof that are entirely broken during your regular inspection of the roof.

These tiles need to be replaced, and if possible, to be replaced with tiles that match the existing tiles are on your roof.

Ideally, when you first get your roof tiled, you will have extra roof tiles if tiles need to be replaced — it is an eventuality in the ownership of a tile roof.

6. Metal Lace Prevents Algae

Algae is a frustrating aspect of having a roof that can come up in the right conditions, but metal lace on your roof tiles can help prevent algae from building up.

The best metal with which to lace one’s tiles is copper, as we have found copper to inhibit algae from growing effectively.
