When you have a deck, you may think that the trickiest part comes in the form of making sure that the deck is properly built — but you will have years of work to do ahead of you once you have a fully built deck.
Specifically, you have to periodically inspect your deck to make sure that it is still in good shape and that nothing has damaged the deck to the extent that it needs to be repaired.
One of the biggest problems that you can find when you are inspecting your deck is that of rot — whether you find a lot of it or there is just a little to be found, it can make a problem for your deck.
If you find a small bit of rot, it’s just a matter of scooping out the rot and applying a special wood preservative so that you do not get any further issues with the rot in that particular area.
If, however, the rot is larger than that you will have a much more substantial problem and you will need to probably replace entire sections of wood — and with that the need to prepare and stain once more.
A leaf or two now and again is nothing to worry about, but if you see a large collection of leaves that fall onto the deck it is worth taking the time to clean them.
The reason that this is the case is that even if leaves appear to be quite innocent, they may bring with them a threat to the deck in the form of getting the deck overly wet which then leads to rot and even worse — the possibility of mildew or mold on your deck should be enough to get you to remove those leaves as soon as you can.
Another thing you should be on the lookout for when you are inspecting your deck is boards that are cracked.
Even if you see that the crack in one of your boards (or more) is small and not that substantial, it’s worth looking at how you can either repair or replace the cracked board.
If the crack is big enough, you should certainly not try to repair it yourself but rather replace the board entirely — which of course would mean that you will need to try to stain it to match the rest of the boards on the deck
There are numerous things that can be considered a heat source that would go on your deck — things like a grill or even an actual fire pit, one of the biggest sources of heat that one typically will find on a deck.
The important thing is that you need to protect these sources of heat from the deck which, being made of wood, is of course vulnerable to said heat.
There are numerous ways to protect a deck from heat, most involving heat resistant pads — it’s important to find one that works for you.
Lastly, you should consider the spacing between your balusters on your deck, especially if you have children or there is the possibility of children visiting your home.
The problem with balusters (think of them as the bars of your deck protection) that are spaced too far apart is that a young child can possibly slip through them and suffer a bad fall.
Do your deck a favor and make sure that it is properly spaced so that nobody can be hurt when they are using it.
