If you ask anyone what is one of the most unpleasant yet important tasks when it comes to outdoor cleaning, they’re likely going to respond that it would have to be the gutters.
This is because they get full of some of the most peculiar stuff, and it has to be properly cleaned – and yet if you are not careful you can get hurt while doing so.
One of the first things you’re going to need to do when you’re looking to clean your gutters is to think about the weather outside – is it raining or otherwise unpleasant?
If this is the case you’re going to need to entirely skip cleaning the gutters that day because you are looking at a risky situation and possibly dangerous for you.
Though it may be difficult to reschedule your gutter cleaning, you will find that rescheduling the cleaning is going to be a lot better than the risk you may be in by not skipping it.
At any time when you’re cleaning your home exterior, you’re going to want to wear appropriate clothing for the situation at hand and this is certainly the case when you’re cleaning your gutters.
You need to have on good quality gloves to protect your hands and goggles to protect your eyes and even a good quality mask so you don’t breathe in any dust.
Additionally, it’s good to wear long sleeves even if it’s a bit warm out as it would be better than the possibility of getting scratched up by what may be in your gutters.
In your effort to reach your gutters you’re going to want to make use of a ladder of course but you should not stand on the top step of the ladder.
The top step of the ladder is not appropriate for standing as it is not the most stable as it were and is better for stepping before moving onto a more stable surface.
There are likely to be quite a few things in your gutter, and as this is going to be the case you may think that the best way to remove them is by hand.
Doing this, however, should only be reserved for some of the larger things that cannot be removed with certain gardening tools small enough to properly get in there and remove them.
To try to remove everything by hand is a bit foolish and perhaps even dangerous as you may end up removing something that could hurt you that is too small to be noticeable, blended in with the other things in the gutter.
It should be fairly obvious why you aren’t going to want to stand on the roof when you are cleaning your gutter but if it is not, here it is – you are quite likely to fall.
Even if you somehow are able to stand on the roof and remove everything from the gutter from that position, you are no doubt going to be in one of the most awkward positions to do so.
Though of course, you are going to want to delay cleaning your gutters, it’s not a good idea to do so.
The longer you put off cleaning your gutters, the more difficult it is ultimately going to be.
Lastly, you need to ensure that your ladder is sufficiently tall.
If you get up on your ladder and you strain to reach the gutter, you will know the ladder is not the right height and you are going to need a taller one.
